Much of the time we are merely moving along in a linear direction and our experience of change is like putting on a new coat or shoes – same old self, different outer circumstances.
But every so often we are called or pushed into something bigger – a life transition.
Transitions often involve the work we do, or how we express ourselves. They call on us to clarify and live a new or re-energized sense of purpose and meaning. They require inner re-orientation and self-redefinition.
They start with endings, letting go of the old, then move through a limbo phase of emptiness, confusion and chaos, before opening to the emerging new beginnings –new opportunities, new relationships, that were usually not visible when the transition began.
Whether triggered by the push of outside circumstances or an growing sense of inner disquiet, discontent or disenchantment, transitions can be powerful portals for opening to a deeper sense of self and our capacities. They are also hard to navigate alone.
We may get lost, confused, frustrated and fall into the trap of snapping back to ‘same old’, or leaping forward to any new that’s handy, just to be free of limbo discomfort. Either way we lose the opportunity transitions offer to live into the more of ourselves.
